What’s New for the 2018 Maserati Ghibli?

First introduced in 1966, the Maserati Ghibli has always prided itself on being a glorious grand tourer, with a blend of high performance and ultra-luxury features. Now in its third generation of production, the Ghibli is now receiving a new range strategy to emphasize either side. For the 2018 model year, the premium midsize sedan is split into the GranSport and GranLusso trims. True to their naming, the GranSport is more racing-oriented, while the GranLusso focuses more on comfortability. The GranSport stands out with a more aggressive exterior design that includes a Black Piano grille, chromed bumper inserts, body-color side skirts, and 19-inch alloy wheels with visible black brake calipers. On the GranLusso, Maserati offers the choice of full premium leather or Ermenegildo Zegna Silk Edition upholstery, which are either accompanied by Radica open-pore wood trim.

The 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbocharged engine on the 2018 Maserati Ghibli now produces 430 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, a slight boost from previous years. Thus, top speed is increased to 177 mph, and 0-to-60 mph is improved to 4.7 seconds. The engine is harnessed to an 8-speed automatic transmission for precise gear changes, and with an intelligent all-wheel-drive system, the car performed remarkably on slippery surfaces. For exterior lighting, both Ghibli models feature adaptive full LED headlights with glare-less Matrix high beams to provide stronger illumination and a unique look. Inside the vehicle, Maserati includes features such as a dashboard-based 8.4-inch high-resolution multimedia touchscreen (Maserati Touch Control Plus, or MTC+), a Wi-Fi hotspot for accessing the Internet at 4G LTE speeds, robust stereo (10-speaker 900-watt Harman Kardon Premium Sound System or 15-speaker 1,280-watt Bowers & Wilkens Surround Sound System) and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for controlling the stereo head unit with your smartphone. And with seating for five, the Ghibli includes 12-way power adjustability on the front seats, with a memory function on the driver’s side for pre-set configurations. (Notably, the seats on the GranSport are sports-styled ones.) In terms of safety, Maserati introduces two components for the 2018 model year: Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) and Electric Power Steering (EPS). IVC is a glorified electronic vehicle stability system—meant to enhance the Ghibli’s ability to stay on the intended driving path. And EPS replaces the hydraulic steering system of previous model years to permit the integration of driving assistance technologies on the vehicle, which include highway assist, active blind spot assist, and lane keeping assist. Also included on the 2018 Ghibli are adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition.
